Paul Heckingbottom slammed the ‘unacceptable’ display of his Sheffield United players – and admitted his future is beyond his control.
The Blades suffered their worst-ever Premier League defeat during Sunday’s 8-0 hammering at home to Newcastle.
Mail Sport revealed last week that former United boss Chris Wilder is in line for a return should the club decide to change manager, and Heckingbottom said: ‘If it’s anything to do with my future, you’re asking the wrong person. I can’t answer that. You get used to the stories.’
Newcastle scored five times in the second half, and Heckingbottom added: ‘A lot of the things I saw in the second half I’ve never seen here. There were far too many mistakes. There are certain things that aren’t acceptable, which they know. You could see moments Newcastle outfought us and outrun us and that is not acceptable. There is still a level of competition we expect. We know they have top-class players but there is an expectation from us that we are here to compete.
‘We understand the league we are in, we’ve lost three points regardless, but as long as we learn from the nature of the defeat and what went wrong, then all we have lost is three points.’
