Socceroos striker’s 7-year Reds hiatus

Tomi Juric is expected to make his long-awaited return for Adelaide United on Monday evening after a seven-year hiatus from the club.

On Sunday, Juric was named in Adelaide’s preliminary squad for the A-League season opener against Western United at Geelong.

The Aussie striker played seven matches for Adelaide United in 2013 before representing the Western Sydney Wanders for two seasons.

Following a five-year stint plying his trade in Europe, Juric signed with his former club in November ahead of the 2020/21 season.

“I’m delighted to be coming back home and joining Adelaide United for the upcoming A-League season,” Juric said in November.

“Adelaide United has a good project in place, I’m excited to be a part of it, and I will help push the club and team to have a successful 2020/21 season.”

Juric is a 2015 Asian Cup winner and has accumulated 41 caps for the Socceroos, scoring eight goals since his international debut in 2013.

Adelaide United Director of Football Bruce Djite said: “Tomi brings an abundance of experience and attacking prowess and he has played on some of the biggest stages in world football for the Socceroos.

“The quality he will bring to our squad will be invaluable and I’m sure he will also be a fantastic mentor to our younger strikers.”

Uncapped players James Delianov, George Timotheou, Joe Caletti, Yaya Dukuly and Javi Lopez also featured in Adelaide’s extended squad, and each could potentially make their debut for the Reds on Monday.

Meanwhile, Ryan Kitto, Yared Abetew and Al Hassan Toure are unavailable for the fuxture as they continue to battle injury.

Adelaide narrowly missed out on a spot in last season’s finals series, but Stefan Mauk’s side put together some promising performances after the coronavirus lockdown.

Western United will take on Adelaide at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 7:05pm AEDT.
