Gareth Southgate is waiting on Jordan Pickford’s fitness ahead of England’s World Cup qualifiers, with West Bromwich No 1 Sam Johnstone a candidate to replace the Everton keeper in the squad.
Pickford was due to have a scan yesterday on the rib injury he aggravated during Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Burnley, though England are hopeful their first-choice keeper will be available.
The Everton man views the World Cup qualifiers against Albania, San Marino and Poland as crucial, with the Euros just three months away, and is desperate to be in Southgate’s squad when it is named on Thursday.

But if the scan rules Pickford out of this month’s matches, Johnstone, who has played extensively for England juniors, will be considered for his first call-up.
The 27-year-old has missed just one Premier League game this season, and despite West Brom’s disappointing season, he has impressed Southgate.
Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was selected on Monday in England’s Under 21 squad and is unlikely to be promoted to the seniors.
Brighton’s Robert Sanchez, who is eligible for England, was handed his first Spain call-up. Southampton keeper Fraser Forster is another option for Southgate, who is likely to pick Nick Pope to start the qualifiers if Pickford is ruled out.
