The Spanish FA has sensationally sacked a member of staff mid-game as the chaos into a second month following Luis Rubiales’s kiss on Jenni Hermoso. The RFEF promised to make sweeping changes to its set-up after Spanish Women’s World Cup winners threatened to strike.
Stars from the major triumph in Australia last month insisted they would not return to the national team until wide-ranging changes had been made within the federation. They began the boycott after former president Luis Rubiales kissed forward Jenni Hermoso, an incident over which the player has filed a report of sexual assault and coercive behaviour.
Rubiales denies the allegations. The former defender has since resigned from his position at the top of the Spanish FA but changes continue to be made.
Sensationally, the latest dismissal has been announced 25 minutes into Spain’s Nations League clash with Sweden. Director of Integrity Miguel Garcia Caba has been deposed from his position.
A statement read: “The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has decided today to dispense with the services of the Director of Integrity, Miguel Garcia Caba.”
It is the latest axe to fall on a high-ranking member of the Spanish FA. Rubiales eventually resigned three weeks after the incident. Jorge Vilda, the World Cup-winning head coach, was sacked, as was the federation’s secretary general.
Hermoso filed criminal charges against Rubiales, 46, earlier this month. He continues to insist on his innocence.
Spain’s World Cup-winning squad threatened to boycott international duty until there were widespread changes among the personnel at the top of the country’s football governing body. Seven hours of meetings early last week concluded with the players deciding not to play for their countries.
However, the RFEF promised it would begin making immediate changes, prompting the players to drop their boycott. Stars were invited to put forward the names of staff who they wanted to depart.
“A joint commission will be created between RFEF, CSD and players to follow up on the agreements, which will be signed tomorrow,” Spanish National Sports Council chief Victor Francos said this week.
“The players have expressed their concern about the need for profound changes in the RFEF, which has committed to making these changes immediately.”
