Spurs fans demand Champions League final replay vs Liverpool after Klopp’s plea

Tottenham fans say they want the 2019 Champions League final against Liverpool to be replayed after Jurgen Klopp suggested the same for Saturday's controversial clash between the two sides.

Luis Diaz's wrongly ruled out goal – and the gargantuan VAR blunder that caused it – has been the talk of the town for the past few days. Faith in Premier League officiating is arguably at an all-time low and calls to alter or even scrap VAR have intensified.

Some, like Klopp, have asked for the match to be replayed, arguing that doing so would restore whatever refereeing integrity was lost at the weekend. Speaking at a press conference ahead of Liverpool's Europa League tie with Union Saint-Gilloise, the German boss said: "As a football person, I think the only outcome should be a replay. That's how it easy. Probably it will not happen."

Spurs supporters, however, were quick to remind Klopp that they were wronged against Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano four years ago, and that if integrity-restoring replays are on the cards, they should be first in line. The Reds won a penalty inside the first minute that day after Liverpool forward Sadio Mane's cross struck Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko between the chest and the armpit, before going on to win the game 2-0.

Posting a screengrab of the ball hitting Sissoko, one Tottenham fan said on X (formerly Twitter): "Does anyone know when this replay is taking place?" Another added: "Liverpool only want games replayed when they've been wrong. No mention of integrity when they've benefitted from VAR, I notice."

"Jurgen Klopp is losing it. What a clown," a third wrote, while a fourth said: "I’ve literally never seen a whinier group of people, there are bad calls every game, move on! I'm starting to hate them more than Arsenal at this point."

For those who have been living under a rock. Diaz had a legitimate goal incorrectly ruled out during Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday. The Colombian was flagged offside after firing the ball past Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario, but VAR Darren England, as well as his assistant Dan Cook, mistakenly thought the goal had been given.

As such, they checked the replay, realised that Diaz was onside, and informed referee Simon Hooper that the call was 'correct'. Audio from inside the VAR room during and after the blunder was released on Wednesday.
