Stelling tells off Merson as Sky Sports pundit apologises during Everton game

Wrexham prepare for life in the Football League

Sky Sports viewers joined Jeff Stelling in frustration as the Soccer Saturday host was forced to scold pundit and Arsenal icon Paul Merson during his final show. Merson was unaware of action that was unfolded as Everton took on Bournemouth in a crucial game at the bottom of the Premier League season.

Jordan Pickford was involved in a clash with Dominic Solanke but when Stelling asked Merson to describe the situation, Merson was unaware and instead was checking his phone at the time for his son’s progress in a football tournament in Paris.

Stelling was then forced to apologise for Merson and said: “This is a big game for a club that hasn’t gone down for 72 years. It’s a pretty big deal and you’re not even watching it.”

Those watching from home were equally as frustrated that Merson could not describe the incident at Goodison Park. On Twitter, @Hanlon_Stephen said: “Can Jeff Stelling take Paul Merson with him when he leaves Sky Sports? He wasn’t watching the game he was assigned to because he was getting an update on his phone on a match his son was playing in.”
