Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has revealed that he does not want to face former side Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Los Blancos progressed to the final eight after a 6-2 win on aggregate against Liverpool, and they have their eyes on Italian opposition.

The Santiago Bernabeu outfit impressed over the two legs, showing a terrific attitude to come from two goals down to win 5-2 at Anfield last month. Madrid then ensured that they were victorious in both legs on Wednesday, winning 1-0 against the rallying Liverpool and never allowing Jurgen Klopp’s side the chance to launch a comeback.

The impressive nature of both wins has put Madrid in a strong position to win back-to-back Champions Leagues, though their league form proves that they are beatable. Madrid are currently second in the La Liga and nine points behind league leaders Barcelona, with injuries taking their toll in the early stages of the campaign.

Madrid will learn of their quarter-final opponents on Friday when the draw is completed in UEFA’s headquarters in Switzerland, and Courtois has already weighed in on potential opponents, revealing that he does not want to draw Chelsea or Manchester City because he faced them last year. He explained: “I would like to change a bit.

“Last year we already faced City and Chelsea, let’s see if we play other teams this year. Last year we made it clear what character we have in the team, with comebacks, we earn respect, we show that Real Madrid is always there.”

Carlo Ancelotti also revealed that he is hoping to avoid Italian opposition, as he would like to face them in the final. The ex-Everton boss is hopeful that his former side AC Milan will progress through the rounds so that he can face them for the trophy.

He told Sky Italia: “To be honest, the ideal would be for us to meet Milan in the final in Istanbul, but there is a long way to go. Napoli are doing very well, they are dominating Serie A and can therefore concentrate entirely on the Champions League.

“All the potential opponents in the quarter-final are dangerous, it will be a real battle.” Several sides will certainly be fearful of Napoli and the damage that they can do, with their attack of Victor Osimhen and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia tearing teams apart on a weekly basis, which has caught the eye of numerous top clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.
