Tottenham have confirmed that Ivan Perisic has suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in his right knee.

The midfielder came off the bench for Tottenham and played a vital role in the club’s comeback against Sheffield United on Saturday, but he will now undergo surgery and likely miss the rest of the season.

The club posted on X that the Croatia international picked up the injury in non-contract training ahead of the club’s game against Arsenal in the north London derby this weekend.

Perisic, 34, was a key member of Antonio Conte’s side last season, regularly featuring at wing back in a Spurs side that finished eighth in the Premier League.

He has been more of a squad player since Ange Postegoclou arrived but has been used as a winger in a 4-3-3 formation under the Australian.

He came off the bench in the 80th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, taking the corner to assist fellow sub Richarlison to score the equaliser before Dejan Kulusevski’s winner.

He has made six appearances for Tottenham this season, with one showing in the Carabao Cup in the club’s penalty shootout defeat to Fulham, but his season is now likely over.

At 34 and out of contract in the summer, it’s possible Perisic has played his last game for the club he joined from Inter Milan last season.

In his Spurs career he has made 50 appearances to date, scoring one goal after arriving on a free transfer to join Conte’s men.

Prior to his arrival he had spent seven years in Italy with Inter Milan, making just under 250 appearances with a loan move to Bayern Munich sandwiched in the middle.

He has also played for Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund and Club Brugge during his career.

The news will come as a big blow to Ange Postecoglou’s side, who have started the season well

Perisic also faces a race against time to be fit for next summer’s European Championships

The veteran also has 129 appearances for the Croatia national team, and was key member of the squad that finished runners-up in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He is third on the list of all-time appearances for his county behind Luka Modric (168) and Darijo Srna (134), and seemed a lock for the squad at this summer’s European Championships.

He however now faces a race against time to be fit for the tournament, which will kick off on June 14 in Germany and run through to July 14.

With the competition nine months away, it’s possible Perisic could be fit in time but he faces months of rehabilitation to recover from the injury once the surgery is complete.
