Tottenham receive new managerial snub in fresh kick in teeth for Daniel Levy

Tottenham managerial target Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will be staying at Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season. The highly-rated Spanish tactician, who only arrived in Germany last October, is said to have made his way onto Spurs’ shortlist as they continue the search for Antonio Conte’s successor.

But now in a fresh blow for Daniel Levy, Alonso has ruled himself out of the running by confirming he intends to remain with Leverkusen this summer.

When asked whether he will be staying put, Alonso said ahead of his side’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Roma: “Yes, it’s correct! I am very happy with the team and the club!”

Alonso’s current contract is due to run until June 2024 meaning Leverkusen are expected to fend off any interest they receive this summer.

Leverkusen are already backing Alonso heavily in the summer transfer market, which is not even officially open, having wrapped up the signing of Benfica left-back Alejandro Grimaldo.

The Bundesliga club are also close to finalising the £13m signing of Granit Xhaka from Arsenal with the Swiss set to leave north London after seven years of service.

Tottenham have already been snubbed by Vincent Kompany, who has recently penned a new contract extension at Burnley.

Spurs also briefed last week that they would not be pursuing the appointment of Julian Naglesmann.

The club claim they are not preparing to speak to the German coach this summer, nor have conversations already been held despite his alleged interest in the job.

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is also set to take over at Chelsea this summer which is another bitter pill for Spurs fans to swallow.

Daniel Levy has opted against the idea of bringing the former Tottenham favourite back to the club as he focuses his efforts on landing a new sporting director.

Spurs now seem to have limited options on the table although Feyenoord’s Arne Slot is a key target of interest.

Feyenoord are reportedly prepared to offer Slot a new bumper salary which will bolster their chances of keeping the Dutchman at the club after his Eredivisie title success.

Thomas Frank is another name that continues to be linked with the vacancy while Brendan Rodgers is looking for a new challenge following his recent sacking at Leicester.

Graham Potter, Ange Postecoglou and Ruben Amorim have also been loosely linked with the position as Tottenham prepare to decide where they turn next.

Oliver Glasner, a name that has previously been followed, will become available at the end of the season when he will leave Eintracht Frankfurt.

Roberto De Zerbi is seemingly committed to Brighton where he plans to continue working despite admiration from further afield.
