Erik ten Hag assesses defeat to Spurs
Tottenham will return to the market for a new striker in January despite splashing out on the deadline-day signing of Brennan Johnson, according to reports. The north Londoners left it late to land Johnson from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth in excess of £45million, with the Welshman signing a six-year contract.
Johnson will be tasked with filling the void left by Harry Kane at Tottenham, with Richarlison having failed to score in the Premier League so far this season. More attacking reinforcements could arrive in January, though, if Spurs manage to sign another striker when the transfer window reopens.
There is ‘certain interest’ from Tottenham regarding the possibility of a future move for Brentford frontman Ivan Toney, according to football.london. Toney is currently suspended for betting breaches but will be allowed to return to training next month, although he must wait until January to play in any matches.
Toney established himself as one of the Premier League’s best forwards prior to his ban and could be a shrewd addition for Tottenham, who have been tentatively linked with his services over the years. Any deal in January is unlikely to be done on the cheap, though, with Brentford having reportedly valued their man at around £80m.

The striker is scheduled to return from his ban against Tottenham at the end of January, which could give them an opportunity to have a good look before making a late move for his signature. However, it remains to be seen whether a deal will come to fruition, with Spurs unlikely to be the only club keen on moving for Toney.
He recently suggested that he could leave Brentford in the near future before going on to express his admiration for Arsenal, which could run the risk of wrecking Tottenham’s hopes if he is approached by the Gunners. Toney was also a boyhood Liverpool fan and could find it difficult to turn the Reds down should they come calling in the new year.

“Whenever that time comes, so be it,” Toney told Diary Of A CEO. “My time at Brentford has probably been one of the best times in my career. The next club I go to if I was to move, it would be the right club. I’ve been a Liverpool fan my whole life but from young, I’ve liked Arsenal, watching Arsenal, how they play & how passionate the fans are.”
There is also a chance that Toney could end up staying at Brentford, with his contract set to run until the summer of 2025 as things stand. A move to Spurs could still be within the realms of possibility, but only time will tell if they will manage to bring him to north London when the bidding reopens next year.
