Tottenham’s club-record signing Tanguy Ndombele has reportedly asked to leave the club for the second successive summer. The French midfield maestro arrived from Lyon two years ago for a fee in the region of £55million but has failed to live up to expectations in north London despite moments of huge promise.

Ndombele got off to the best possible start under Mauricio Pochettino, netting on his Premier League debut against Aston Villa in August 2019.

But injuries and the Argentine’s dismissal in November 2019 saw Ndombele’s Tottenham career take a turn for the worse.

He was not deemed fit enough to feature in the second half of the season under Jose Mourinho, who later broke lockdown regulations to meet with the player for private sessions in a local park in a bid to boost his performance levels.

The 24-year-old and his agent held a meeting with Daniel Levy as shown in the Amazon documentary series All or Nothing, in which Ndombele declared he was not enjoying his time at the club.

At the end of the campaign, Ndombele requested to leave with Barcelona among those that were reportedly interested in a move amid swap deal discussions.

But he eventually stayed and won Mourinho over to become a regular in the Spurs side, turning in a number of memorable performances in the middle of the park.

Yet following Mourinho’s departure, Ndombele’s morale dipped and he is yet to feature this season under new boss Nuno Espirito Santo having been left out of the club’s match day squads.

The Athletic are now reporting that Ndombele has officially asked to leave the club.

There has been little interest in the player so far this summer but a return to Lyon is believed to be a possibility.

Tottenham are interested in Houssem Aouar, meaning a potential exchange could be viable for all parties.

Nuno has since confirmed that Ndombele won’t be involved this weekend when the Portuguese takes his side to old club Wolves.

“I can be completely honest with you, Tanguy is not going to be involved in the squad on Sunday,” he said in Friday’s press conference.

The midfielder was on target in the same fixture last season in a 1-1 draw at Molineux.

Nuno is reluctant to keep any players at Tottenham against their will.

It’s believed Harry Winks, who started last night’s Conference League defeat to Pacos de Ferreira in Portugal, is determined to stay and fight for his place.

Aston Villa and Everton are amongst the clubs to have shown an interest in the England international.

On the flip side, Tottenham do need to sell to raise cash for new signings and Ndombele’s close friends Moussa Sissoko and Serge Aurier are amongst those being pushed towards the door.
