Kieran Trippier says more England players should try their luck abroad – even though coronavirus has made it harder to be away from home.
Trippier admits the pandemic has made it tough to be so far away from close relatives back in England.
But he has no regrets about leaving Tottenham for high-flying Atletico Madrid, who are third in La Liga, and believes playing abroad will benefit England's growing army of expats.
Trippier said: "It can be difficult and challenging with what’s going on at the moment but I’ve got my wife and my kids.
“My mad two children keep me on my toes every single day. Obviously I don’t get to see my parents, and my grandparents and the rest of my family.
“But you need to keep yourself positive. I’ve got my wife and two children in Spain and I’ve got good people around me at the club, teammates who don’t live far from me.
“For me, I felt it was the right time to move abroad and try something new. A different challenge. When I was leaving Tottenham, I knew I needed to play at the highest level.
“I feel like I’ve learned a lot from playing with my teammates, a different culture, I’ve learned a lot about myself.
“I feel like it is a great opportunity and you see Jude Bellingham, Jadon Sancho, Ashley Young, Chris Smalling… I feel that it’s very good.
“Trying different leagues, the tactical approach, it’s totally different to England. To be honest, it’s benefitted my game, my awareness in games now.”
Trippier was forced to miss England’s clash with Denmark last month to attend an FA disciplinary hearing after he was charged with breaking betting rules.
But he played in Sunday’s defeat to Belgium and is set to start against Iceland too despite having a potential six-month ban hanging over his head.
Trippier said: “I can’t speak about anything about the FA case but I’m just thinking positive. I just need to concentrate on my football and give my all like I always do."
