What Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag told Adrien Rabiot about his Old Trafford role

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews Wolves win

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has, according to reports in France, touched base with Adrien Rabiot about a potential move to Old Trafford this summer. The Juventus star’s deal with the Serie A giants is due to expire at the end of the campaign. And it’ll be interesting to see what unfolds given details that came to light last year…

According to L’Equipe, United are keen on Rabiot again.

They agreed a fee with Juventus for the midfielder last summer, only for the player’s wage demands to scupper his chances of a Premier League move.

And, back in August, it was claimed Ten Hag had held talks with the France international behind the scenes.

It was claimed the United boss had told Rabiot he would be a certain starter at Old Trafford, despite the other players at his disposal.

The report also said that while the 28-year-old would normally prefer to leave Juventus for a Champions League team, he was willing to make an exception to wear the Red Devils’ iconic colours.

Obviously, a deal didn’t materialise.

Man Utd transfers: Ten Hag wants another Pogba and it makes sense

United ended up swooping for Casemiro instead, with the Brazil international pursuing a new challenge after winning every major trophy at Real Madrid.

Fast-forward to now, however, and it appears the Red Devils are keen on Rabiot again.

As free transfers go, it makes sense. Rabiot is a slick midfield operator and would bring experience to Ten Hag’s side as well.

He is a serial winner, too, having won trophies at both Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus during the course of his career.

Rabiot remains divisive despite his achievements, with the player’s attitude previously leaving much to be desired towards the end of his time in France.

But with United looking to challenge the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal for the Premier League title, the 28-year-old could be useful.

In the event of any deal for the Juventus star, Scott McTominay would potentially be shown the door.

The Scotland international has never quite scaled the heights many expected when he burst onto the scene under Jose Mourinho five years ago.

And with McTominay already not a guaranteed starter, he could be sold to balance the books with Newcastle being linked.

A move for Rabiot would also complicate a permanent arrangement for Marcel Sabitzer, too.

The Austria international was signed on loan from Bayern Munich back in January following a serious injury to Christian Eriksen.

Sabitzer has done well at times but Bayern are thought to want a fee in the region of £20million to let him leave the Allianz Arena.

And given Rabiot would cost nothing, he’d be a far cheaper alternative.

Speaking back in March, meanwhile, the Juventus star revealed he was ‘calm’ over his future.

“At the moment, there’s no news, but we’ll certainly talk soon,” he said at the time.

“Because in about two months the season will be over and we’ll try to discuss it, but I’m calm.

“There is the possibility of leaving but also the possibility of signing another contract with Juve for all the reasons I explained earlier.”

He added: “I feel good in Turin, I do a good job at the club and there’s a good relationship with the directors, my team-mates and the coach.

“He also helped me in two years as well as giving me a lot of confidence.

“I believe that all of this is important to feel good and therefore make the right choice for my future.”
