Wrexham provide Ben Foster update as Mullin gets new deal and 11 players leave

Wrexham have announced that 11 players will leave the club this summer after unveiling their retained list. After winning the National League title, the Welsh club are preparing for a return to the English Football League for the first time in 15 years.

The club will be competing in League Two next season, and will be joined by Notts County, who beat Chesterfield Town in the Play-Off final at the weekend. Now, work will be undertaken to prepare Wrexham for their first season back in the EFL for more than a decade.

Soon after Wrexham’s season came to an end, the players were treated to a luxury trip to Las Vegas. Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney helped make sure the players enjoyed a celebratory trip following their efforts this season.

In a statement released by the club, Wrexham have now announced their full retained list following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season. This includes the players whose contracts will expire and will not be offered an extension.

In total, 11 players will leave Wrexham as free agents this summer. They are: Ryan Austin, Kai Calderbank-Park, Malik Dijksteel, Reece Hall-Johnson, Jake Hyde, Harry Lennon, Rory Watson, Tom Jenkins, Dan Jones, Louis Lloyd and Will Mountfield.

The statement also provided updates on two key players for Wrexham, with the first being Ben Foster. The experienced goalkeeper came out of retirement in March to play for the Welsh club in the final weeks of the season.

Wrexham have confirmed that the club are currently in talks with the 40-year-old to see what the stopper’s intentions are, stating: “a discussion will take place with Ben Foster to establish if his intention is to return to retirement or continue playing”.

Additionally, Wrexham say they have activated one-year contract extensions for Mark Howard, Anthony Forde and star striker Paul Mullin. The forward signed a three-year deal that runs until 2024, but now his extension will mean Mullin will be contracted to Wrexham until the end of the 2024/25 season.

Mullin was Wrexham’s top scorer this season on their way to promotion to League Two. The 28-year-old scored 46 goals in 51 appearances, including 38 in the National League.

Liam McAlinden has been offered a new contract, while a decision is yet to be made whether Kai Evans will be handed an extension this summer. Harry Lennon will retire from professional football after his exit.
