  • Supporters lined up to praise the Brazilian following his decisive involvement

Antony has been roundly praised by Manchester United supporters on social media following his match-winning goal against Barcelona on Thursday night.

The Brazilian, who has faced his fair share of critics since his high-profile move from Ajax last summer, delivered the knockout blow as United defeated Barcelona 2-1 on the night (4-3 agg) to advance to the last-16 of the Europa League.

Echoing the praise handed out to the player by his manager post-match, with Erik ten Hag citing Antony’s innate belief in his own abilities, supporters took to social media to lavish the winger with acclaim.

‘Antony, you beautiful man,’ one clearly enthused supporter wrote.

Another echoed the sentiment, urging the Brazilian to maintain his impressive performance levels. ‘What a player!’ they wrote. ‘Keep going Antony, you are amazing.’

The Brazilian was introduced at half-time and helped Erik ten Hag’s side overturn the deficit

Critiqued this season for appearing to go within himself when the going got tough, one supporter noted Antony ‘stepping up’ when it mattered most – in, perhaps, United’s biggest game of their season so far.

‘Antony stepping up when it’s needed the most. We on baby!’ they wrote.

Another added that they ‘knew’ United were going to win when Antony entered the fray, replacing Wout Weghorst at half-time.

‘When Antony came on I knew we were gonna win,’ they claimed.

Amid praise for Antony, one supporter found it within themselves to single out Fred for his showing in midfield. The midfielder grabbed the equaliser just after the break.

They wrote: ‘Incredible game! Antony locked up the right hand side in the second half. Fred – what a shift!’

Another, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, added: ‘Antony, I never doubted you!’

While another, pointing to Antony’s undeniable self-belief, noted: ‘You can question his g/a (goals and assists) contributions man, but it’s very rare to get profile of Antony in other players.’

Antony himself, writing on social media after the game, said: ‘What a night. What a club. What a stadium.’

Ten Hag’s side are now in the hat for Friday’s last-16 draw, where they could face Union Saint-Gilloise, SC Freiburg, Ferencvaros, Feyenoord, Real Betis, Real Sociedad or Fenerbahce.
