Andy Murray plays what could be his last ever match on Monday, taking on Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round of the Australian Open.

A tearful Murray announced his imminent retirement from tennis last week, due to a chronic hip injury, but stopped short of revealing when he will call it quits.

Defeat against the No 22 seed could well see the former world No 1 hang up his racquet for good before the Wimbledon homecoming that he so longs for.

The match on the Melbourne Arena is expected to get underway at around 07.00 GMT.

Kyle Edmund is playing Tomas Berdych in the match preceding Murray at the Melbourne Arena. Last year’s semi-finalist has already lost the first set 6-3.

It could be a significant day in the history of British tennis as Andy Murray plays his first round Australian Open match against Spain’s Roberto Bautista Aug.

Defeat could bring the curtain down on the career of the finest player Britain has ever produced. Murray will retire this year due to struggles with a hip injury that surgery has failed to rectify.

His plan is to make it to Wimbledon but major doubts over his fitness could curtail that. All we do know is that he is in action shortly in Melbourne.
