Naomi Osaka reacts after stunning comeback to win second US Open title

Naomi Osaka became the first woman since 1994 to win the US Open final after losing the first set, beating Victoria Azarenka 1-6 6-3 6-3 to claim a third Grand Slam title.

Twenty-six years since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario roared back after losing the first set 6-1 to Stefi Graf, Osaka channelled the same energy to win her second US Open title.

Osaka, the fourth seed from Japan, curiously returned to the court to lie down after congratulating her opponent at the net – and she revealed she was after a classic post-Grand Slam win photo, but didn’t want to just throw herself to the floor.

‘I always see everyone collapse after match point,’ said Osaka. ‘But I always think you may injure yourself so I wanted to do it safely.’

Azarenka had expressed her desire to face off against Osaka in more big finals in the future, but Osaka didn’t sound so keen on that idea.

‘I want to congratulate Vika,’ she added.
