Fans are mocking Nike for claiming that tennis was entering a Carlos Alcaraz ‘era’ in a controversial post. The sportswear giant sponsor the Spaniard and made the statement after he defeated Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon. But the remark is coming back to haunt them following Djokovic’s victory at the US Open, where he lifted his 24th Grand Slam crown.
Djokovic made history on Sunday when he became the first player in the Open Era to reach 24 Majors. The Serb defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 in the final to lift his fourth title at the US Open, five years after his last.
It means that the 36-year-old has won three of the four Majors in a single season for the third time – also doing so in 2015 and 2021. His only defeat came at Wimbledon where he lost to Alcaraz in an epic five-set final. It was the first time in a decade that Djokovic lost a match on Centre Court.
The Wimbledon title marked Alcaraz’s second Grand Slam trophy at the age of just 20. At the time, Nike marked his victory with a triumphant poster and wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “The Alcaraz Era is upon us.” But the post has now backfired with Djokovic showing that he isn’t going anywhere as fans have been making fun of the claim.

The biggest blow came from the official SerbianFootball account as they quoted the original post from Wimbledon finals day and wrote: “Hey guys just following up. How is the Alcaraz Era going?”
And plenty of Djokovic’s supporters joined in, making fun of the post. “Who was it who said we are in Alcaraz era after Wimbledon??? Novak – 4 slam finals . 3 wins. 1 loss. We are in Novak era for past 13 years,” @MaheshS_Wali said following Sunday night’s US Open final.
@domi_stan_ added: “Audacity to call this alcaraz era when djokovic won 3 slams this year.” And one fan brought up Nike’s comment before Djokovic had even contested the final against Medvedev. After the Serb’s semi-final match, @Belalzfr wrote: “Novak may end up winning 3 slams in the 1st year of Alcaraz Era.”

One fan, @SRBNews247, took a different approach, writing: “Massive respect to Carlos Alcaraz who is a great talent but Novak Djokovic will decide when his era is over.” And Djokovic himself has already proven them right, as he said he wouldn’t be retiring while he was still at the top of the game and still able to beat his young rivals.
“It’s not my interest and neither business to really review what everyone talks about or thinks, whether there is a passing of the torch or new gen, next gen, future gen, whatever you want to call it, happening or not happening in the sport,” he said after winning the US Open. “You know, I focus on what I need to do and how I get myself in an optimal state so that I can win the biggest trophies in our sport. That’s what I care about.”
Djokovic later added: “Knowing that I play at such a high level still and I win the biggest tournaments in this sport, yeah, I don’t want to get rid of this sport or I don’t want to leave this sport if I’m still at the top, you know, if I’m still playing the way I’m playing.”
