Virgil van Dijk has been hit with a charge by the FA for his reaction to receiving a red card in Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Newcastle United on Sunday. The Liverpool captain faces further punishment after his first-half dismissal at St. James’ Park in a potentially major blow for Jurgen Klopp.

Van Dijk endured a woeful afternoon on Tyneside, being sent for an early shower just moments after ex-Everton winger Anthony Gordon fired the hosts ahead.

He was adjudged to have been the last man after tripping Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, prompting referee John Brooks to show him red.

But Van Dijk fumed with the decision and verbally scolded Brooks and fourth official Craig Pawson as he refused to leave the pitch.

And in line with referee boss Howard Webb efforts to minimise abuse towards match officials, the FA have reacted two days later.

The FA has released a statement laying out Van Dijk’s breach of regulations, giving the Dutchman until Friday to respond to the charge.

It reads: “Virgil Van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August.

So the Football Association has to clamp down and punish Virgil Van Dijk for his unacceptable behaviour at Newcastle on Sunday,” Halsey told The Sun.

“The new Liverpool captain fell well below the standards set by one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. Van Dijk swore, gestured and constantly questioned Brooks following the red card.

“Van Dijk will rightly receive a one-match ban for the straight red card, but I believe his suspension should be increased.

“The abusive and insulting language used by the new Reds leader could be worthy of another red card and result in an additional three-match ban.”

Follow Daily Express on Threads for all the latest news
