Antony was on the receiving end of a few stern words from Erik ten Hag during the second half of Manchester United’s game against Arsenal on Sunday. The Red Devils opened the scoring through Marcus Rashford after 27 minutes before Martin Odegaard levelled proceedings for the hosts just moments later.

Meetings between the two clubs are rarely quiet affairs and Sunday’s game was no exception, with tensions rising high during the match at the Emirates Stadium. United began the second half relatively well, finding some joy in the final third with Rashford and Anthony Martial both having chances to score after the break.

Antony, meanwhile, looked slightly off the pace and felt the wrath of Ten Hag before the hour mark when the Dutchman was spotted giving him a rollicking on the touchline. The Brazilian winger then lost possession the next time he got on the ball, which may not have gone down too well in the United dugout, before he was substituted with seven minutes remaining.

Alejandro Garnacho, who came on for Antony, went on to score what he thought was a last-gap winner for United before his goal was ruled out for offside. The result eventually went in Arsenal’s favour thanks to two dramatic stoppage-time goals from Declan Rice and substitute Gabriel Jesus.

JUST IN: Erling Haaland ‘to receive contract offer’ worth double Mo Salah deal

It has been a mixed start to life in the Premier League for Antony, who has often struggled to impress since joining United from Ajax last summer. There have been a few moments of brilliance from the 23-year-old but his performances have rarely been consistent enough to justify his £82million price tag.

Antony has regularly been criticised for his a lack of end product, with his tendency to showboat not always endearing him to United fans and pundits alike. He has managed to cut down on the latter aspect of his game in recent months but is still often singled out as a regular underperformer for the Red Devils.

He came under fire earlier this week when he was slammed by former United striker Andy Cole, who raised questions over whether or not the former Ajax man is good enough to start on a weekly basis.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. He needs to do more, it’s that simple.

“Let’s put the shoe on the other foot, if this was Paul Pogba, who came for the same sort of money, he would be absolutely berated every week.”

Want the latest Premier League news as we publish it on Express Sport?
