Erik ten Hag faces a real headache after Manchester United failed to offload Donny van de Beek and Eric Bailly on transfer deadline day. The Dutchman will now be left with the dilemma of what to do with the pair after deeming them both surplus to requirements.

Van de Beek remains linked with a move to Galatasaray, who had a £1million loan deal rejected earlier on deadline day. As the Turkish window closes a fortnight later, there is a chance the Dutchman could be on his way out the door in the coming days providing Galatasaray improve their opening offer.

Premier League newcomers Luton Town were also said to be interested in sensationally acquiring the services of the Red Devils midfielder but the transfer never materialised. Meanwhile, Bailly, who had attracted interest from Nottingham Forest and Fulham didn’t secure an exit on the final day either. His £80,000-a-week wages proved to be the sticking point.

With two years remaining on his deal, Bailly doesn’t even have a squad number after Ten Hag decided to take his No 3 shirt away from him this summer in anticipation of his departure. He spent last season on loan at Marseille where he failed to impress in 23 appearances.

Unlike Van de Beek, there is no clear exit plan for Bailly, who may end up being demoted to the Under 21s if he is not registered for first-team football this season. The longer United keep hold of both players the more their values will diminish.

So, club executives will want to offload them both as quickly as possible in order to recoup funds. Bailly joined United in 2016 for £30m from Villareal while Van de Beek set the Red Devils back £35m plus a further £5m in add-ons in 2020 when he completed his move from Ajax.

More info

Man Utd have been handcuffed by Financial Fair Play regulations this transfer window but have nevertheless managed to get some good business done. Ten Hag finally managed to sign the modern ball-playing goalkeeper he had been crying out for in Andre Onana while Rasmus Hojlund’s addition will hopefully put an end to the Red Devils’ striker woes.

On deadline day, United also reached an agreement with Fiorentina to bring Sofyan Amrabat in on loan. Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon has also joined on a one-year loan to help fill in at left-back with both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia out of action for several weeks.
