There were shades of Jurgen Klopp in Mauricio Pochettino’s post-match interview after Chelsea’s disappointing loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The west Londoners fell to their second defeat in four Premier League matches, with the visitors claiming a memorable three points at Stamford Bridge.

Forest took the lead just after the break when Anthony Elanga found the bottom corner after being played through by Taiwo Awoniyi. Chelsea responded by throwing men forward and had multiple opportunities to score, although they failed to take their chances and the elusive goal never arrived.

The result saw Pochettino’s lacklustre start to life at Chelsea go on, with the Blues already six points adrift of the Premier League’s top four. He issued a call for patience after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge, insisting that it will take time before the squad begins to gel and their results start to improve.

“When you lose a game, the things that are negative appear [but] you know a process like this is always ups and down,” said Pochettino. “We have a very young squad. We need to prove we can score and we can deal with the situation. Of course, we need to be more clinical in front of the goal and not make the same mistake like today when we concede the chance to Nottingham.”

They have persisted with their policy of chopping and changing under Todd Boehly after gaining a reputation for doing so throughout Roman Abramovich’s ownership.

Graham Potter found out the hard way when he was ditched just a few months after signing a five-year contract upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge. It remains to be seen whether Pochettino will suffer the same fate, although it would not be a surprise to see the Blues lose patience before the end of the season if their results fail to improve.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. The German was quick to insist that he needed time to turn things around, with the Reds ultimately reaping the rewards of sticking by their man.

“Please give us the time to work on it, to think much more positive then you do today about me and about everyone at Liverpool,” said Klopp when he was unveiled by Liverpool eight years ago.

“This could be a really special day if you want and if you work for it and if you are patient enough. We start today in a difficult league against opponents who are bigger and bigger but in a special Liverpool way, we can be successful. We can wait for it. I don’t want to say we have to wait for 20 years, but when I sit here in four years I’m pretty sure we will have won a title.”

Want the latest Premier League news as we publish it on Express Sport?
