While Manchester United’s share price suffered a record drop following the Mail on Sunday’s report that the Glazers were going to take the club off the market, sources close to the two bidders in the takeover race on Tuesday night disclosed they had not been informed that the sale was off.

Those close to the process added that nothing had changed.

United stock plunged by 21 per cent at one stage as the New York Stock Exchange reacted to the report.

The club’s owners, the Glazers, announced last November that they would explore investment options, including the prospect of a full sale.

However, 10 months have passed and the Americans, despised by large sections of United’s support, remain in charge.

But Manchester United bidders have not been told that the club will be taken off the market

Fans have already launched protests and reacted with dismay following the report, which said the Glazers were going to take United off the market, having failed to find a bid close to their anticipated asking price.

However, insiders in both the camps of Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim and British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe said they had not been informed of such a conclusion.

Sources with knowledge of the process added that negotiations were continuing.

Both bids were around the £5bn mark, some way short of the Glazers’ valuation. The talks are aimed at bridging what is a substantial gap.

Club legend Gary Neville savaged the Glazers for treating United ‘like a toy’ and claimed ‘it’s just a game for them’.

The family made it known last November that they were open to offers for either 100 per cent of the club, or a partial sale that left them with a sizeable stake. Just two serious bidders, Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, have emerged, however.

The lengthy saga has also left the interested parties frustrated over the Glazers’ uncertain stance, having been given little indication of where they stand.

And Neville, who has been particularly outspoken over United’s gradual drift in recent years, issued a fresh attack on the Glazers after the 3-1 defeat by Arsenal.

Gary Neville has criticised the running of the club and says the Glazers treat it like a ‘toy’

The Americans, despised by large sections of United’s partisan support, remain in charge

United supporters staged a recent sit-in protest in a bid to convince the Glazers to sell up

Sir Jim Ratcliffe also lodged bids ranging in the billions but has so far been unsuccessful

He is, however, confident that they will ultimately sell up.

‘It’s just a game for them, they think it’s a toy!’ Neville raged on the latest edition of his Sky podcast. ‘Of course they’re going to sell. They’re desperate for money.

‘They can’t even compete on FFP [Financial Fair Play] anymore. Man Utd are talking like a midtable club when it comes to the transfer market. Man Utd turn over £500million, one of the highest revenue generating clubs in the world.

‘Chelsea, Arsenal can sign big players, Man Utd are scrambling around on FFP. I know they’ve had losses on Covid and that could be thrown as an excuse.

‘Today was a fantastic game but it won’t change the fact that they’ve got owners of one of the biggest clubs in the world who are messing around with the football club and I’m not going to stop talking about it because it’s a massive problem.’

Supporters attribute much of United’s stark decline over the past decade to the much-maligned Americans, who are blamed for a lack of success and investment in infrastructure – neglect that has left Old Trafford in desperate need of renovation.

Mail Sport revealed how at one point Sheikh Jassim’s camp bypassed US merchant bankers Raine, who were placed in charge of the sale process last year, to deal directly with the Glazers. The situation has failed to progress, though.

A source believes the logic for taking United off the market now is that the family will try to sell again in 2025, when they hope they may attract more bidders.

It’s All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify.

Your browser does not support iframes.

IT’S ALL KICKING OFF!
