Republic of Ireland fans will be desperate for Evan Ferguson to clock up just one more competitive appearance, which would close off the possibility of a dramatic switch of allegiances to England. The Brighton striker is tipped for future stardom at club and international level, with his electric start to the season sparking further excitement around just how far he could go.

FIFA rules state that players are eligible to switch nationalities until they have played four competitive games for one country. Ferguson has notched six caps in total for Ireland, but only three of them have been in competitive matches.

And Irish fans will have to wait patiently for the fourth, as Ferguson has pulled out of the nation’s upcoming matches against France and the Netherlands due to injury.

The 18-year-old could, in theory, still switch to the Three Lions as he qualifies through his English mother. However, Ferguson has already done his best to put supporters at ease.

My mam is English, so that’s where the tie comes in. But I’ve seen a few saying oh, will he? Will he? But I can tell you now it’s a no. I wouldn’t be allowed back by my dad.”

Ferguson is already off the mark at senior international level, scoring in a friendly against Latvia and a Euro 2024 qualifier against Gibraltar earlier this year. Even more impressive is the fact that he has only started two of those games.

The Seagulls ace is therefore averaging a goal every 52 minutes – a better rate than Haaland, who obliterated the single-season record in 2022/23 by scoring 36 goals for Manchester City. Remarkably, Ferguson is also converting one in every three shots on goal.

The striker, who stands at 6ft 2in tall, rose through the ranks with Bohemians and got his first taste of senior action at just 14 years old, when he appeared in a pre-season friendly against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

Manchester City and Tottenham are understood to be among a host of top clubs keeping tabs on the teenager, who scored a superb hat-trick against Newcastle United last time out.
