In February, Erik ten Hag heralded Jadon Sancho after he marked his return from months away with a goal against Leeds United. Sancho had spent a period with Ten Hag’s personally-appointed coaches in the Netherlands to train ‘mentally and physically’ but looked ready to become a success at Manchester United.

But seven months on, the 23-year-old’s progress has stalled again, and Sunday’s social media statement was more of a setback than anything else.

Ten Hag revealed Sancho didn’t travel for the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal due to poor training performances, naming teenager Dan Gore on the bench instead.

Shortly after, Sancho didn’t wait to discuss the matter privately and published a counter statement on social media, claiming he believed he was being made a ‘scapegoat’.

And now the United No 25’s Old Trafford future is in limbo ahead of crunch talks with Ten Hag, likely during the international break after his latest England snub.

The Dutchman has already showcased his ruthless edge at United, and he won’t be afraid to condemn Sancho to the same fate as players like Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea.

It is clear it is a difficult period, but he finds himself out, and he needs credit for that,” Ten Hag explained.

“He is a brilliant footballer, and if he can invest in the right levels, he can be outstanding. I will back him, the coaches will, and the team will, but finally, he has to do it himself.

“It is in his own hands. If he wants, he can do it. We now have a team that can play in the opponents’ half. He likes that. He can play in tight areas.

DON’T MISS

“At this moment, he is in a good mood, and it will strengthen him. It will motivate him to give more.

“He is in the right direction, and if he keeps going with that process, he can do even more to really help us to achieve our goals.”

Sancho’s days at United could be numbered if he continues to fail to ‘do it himself’, as Ten Hag demanded earlier this year.

But the Red Devils boss has repeatedly stated how highly he rates the £73million star and will hope for a positive outcome from the private meeting expected before club football resumes.

Follow Daily Express on Threads for all the latest news
