Scott McTominay is now the joint-top scorer in Euro 2024 qualifying after he netted his sixth goal in five matches to lead Scotland to the cusp of glory.

Courtesy of their comfortable 3-0 victory in Cyprus, Steve Clarke’s side are just two points away from officially confirming their spot at next year’s tournament.

And they were once again powered to their fifth successive win by midfielder McTominay, whose international heroics are a stark contrast to his club woes.

Indeed, he has found himself firmly down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United and was even expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Instead, however, he seemingly channelled any lingering frustration into another barnstorming performance for his country, leading to their early breakthrough.

The midfielder bravely headed home inside the opening six minutes to make the breakthrough

McTominay’s international heroics are a stark contrast to his woes with Manchester United

With just six minutes on the clock, Andy Robertson’s cross was flicked on by John McGinn, with McTominay bravely challenging for the ball and nodding home.

With his head firmly in the firing line, McTominay took his qualifying tally to six goals, moving him level with Denmark’s Rasmus Hojlund and Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku.

Remarkably, the likes of Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe all find themselves trailing McTominay, who appears reborn on the biggest of stages.

A draw between Norway and Georgia next Tuesday would clinch Scotland’s qualification, meaning their progression to Germany is now all but secured.

Clarke’s side were dominant on their way to extending their impressive 100 per cent record, with Ryan Porteous and McGinn also both on target in the first half.

Ryan Porteous also netted to help Scotland move to the cusp of the showpiece in Germany

McTominay has insisted Steve Clarke’s side will remain grounded and limit their celebrations

McTominay, 26, previously scored against Cyprus and Spain in March and then bolstered his own goal column by also netting against Georgia in June.

‘We have to keep a lid on it,’ he said post-match.

‘We know we are all really good players in the dressing room that we have got. We have got a really good squad which is full of great characters as well.

‘John McGinn is the prime suspect for being a great character and keeping the group together and always wanting us to push and keep going.

‘So I feel like for us it is relatively simple. We have just got to keep our feet on the ground and keep trying to win games and not concede goals.’
