As if Chelsea fans weren't already longing for their stars of glory days past, the club's Legends team showed them just how it's supposed to be done.

The Blues have looked largely boresome under Mauricio Pochettino so far this season, with a 3-0 throttling of promoted Luton counting as their only Premier League win from four attempts. The top-flight titans also had to come from behind to advance past AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup, losing 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest just before the international break.

But Stamford Bridge travelled back in time on Saturday as an assortment of club icons took to the field against a team of Bayern Munich Legends. A clash held in remembrance of late club icon Gianluca Vialli, the game was a rematch of the 2012 Champions League and featured the kind of quality football befitting the occasion.

Michael Essien, John Terry and Gary Cahill – each of whom played prominent roles that season – got on the score sheet to put the result beyond doubt before the 60 minutes was up. But it was Portuguese playmaker Tiago Mendes who saved the best for last in stoppage time.

Despite not being revered as a goalscorer during his time in England's capital – scoring four times in 52 outings for Chelsea – the midfielder oozed class when tucking away the fourth. Some slick build-up precedes a marauding run from deep that was spotted by Essien, who picked out the 66-cap former Portugal star so he could chip over with the deftest of lobs.

The run, assist and finish left fans drooling over what they'd witnessed, with one even joking "Chelsea Legends might be better than our current team." If it weren't for the fact those ex-players in their forties and fifties would lose out in the cardio stakes, that statement might just be true.

Another remarked that 'Essien and Mikel were cooking' in midfield, a tandem that might start ahead of struggling duo Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

Other former Blues who featured at the Bridge on Saturday included John Obi Mikel, Ramires, Florent Malouda, Tore Andre Flo and Gianfranco Zola, whose pass to Essien helped tee up Tiago. Owen Hargreaves turned out for Die Roten, meanwhile, but Bayern looked severely outclassed over two 30-minute halves.

Pochettino's current crop of players are currently sat 12th in the Premier League, with no team above them having mustered fewer than their five goals. What's even more embarrassing is that three of those came in that singular victory over the Hatters.

"It was just an unbelievable night celebrating Luca’s life and it was a great turnout from the supporters so a massive thank you to everyone who turned up and played and for the fans for coming down.

"Of course, it was a sad night as well but we are here celebrating his life and I think the reception from the fans at the start would have given his family some comfort in knowing that he was an absolute legend and was idolised by everyone."

Tiago's goal was a fitting way to cap off a special evening commemorating one of the club's finest servants. However, it was also bittersweet in that it reminded fans of precisely what the current squad is missing.
