The German FA will reportedly speak to Julian Nagelsmann and Matthias Sammer about succeeding Hansi Flick as manager of the national team.

Flick was sacked as head coach following a meeting with shareholders on Sunday, just nine months before Euro 2024 on home soil.

The former Bayern Munich manager had a hugely unsuccessful stint in charge of the national team, with a 4-1 loss to Japan on Saturday ultimately the final straw.

Rudi Voller has been named interim manager for Tuesday night’s friendly with France and could continue for the Euros but the DFB are exploring their options, according to The Telegraph.

Nagelsmann, who parted ways with Bayern Munich in March this year, is currently the favourite to get the role on a permanent basis.

Sammer is also in the running. The Germany legend was Bayern Munich’s sporting director and currently works part-time as an adviser for Borussia Dortmund. He was previously manager of Stuttgart and Dortmund, back in the early 2000s.

A statement released by the national side on Sunday confirmed that Flick had been dismissed.

President of the German Football Association, Bernd Neuendorf said: ‘The committees agreed that the Men’s Senior National Team needs new impetus after the recent disappointing results. We need a spirit of optimism and confidence in our own country.

‘For me personally, it is one of the most difficult decisions of my time in office so far. Because I appreciate Hansi Flick and his assistant coaches as football experts and people. But sporting success is the top priority for the DFB. So the decision was inevitable.’

Jurgen Klopp is also admired by Germany – but the 56-year-old is committed to Liverpool and would want to honour his contract at Anfield before thinking of taking charge of the national team.

And though Klopp would not rule out a move in the future, the Liverpool boss is likely to say no to managing Germany in their home European Championship next summer, with him having three years remaining on his Anfield deal.

Germany are short of confidence and without a manager just a year out from hosting the Euros

Reports in Germany suggested that the association is ‘enamoured’ with Klopp and are weighing up a move for the Liverpool boss at the end of this season. But Nagelsmann, who is still legally under contract at Bayern, is said to be the favourite.

Flick’s Germany were knocked out of the World Cup after defeat by Japan, a result that saw them finish third in their group.

The national side have been in a real rut since with Flick seeing his side lose to Belgium, Poland, Colombia and Japan – while they drew with Ukraine in June.

Germany face a difficult test on Tuesday when they host World Cup finalists France in a friendly at Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park.

They have already automatically qualified for Euro 2024 as hosts of the tournament.
