Judd Trump sent the Shanghai Masters crowd into a frenzy after his stunning trick shot during his 6-5 victory over Jack Lisowski to reach the quarter-finals. Trump did not enjoy a completely comfortable match as snooker returned to China for the first time since 2019 due to Covid-19, but wowed those in attendance during the sixth frame.

Trump had been leading 3-2 and set to take a two-frame lead having been 108 points clear of his opponent, but found himself in a difficult position on the green. It had been positioned on the other side of the blue, with Trump forced to come off a cushion in order to make contact and afford giving up a snooker – though the frame had already been won.

But the four-time Triple Crown winner was in the mood to showcase his immense talents, turning on the style by coming off the corner of the right-middle pocket with pace to clip the green and send it into the opposite pocket – sending the Shanghai crowd into raptures as they applauded the stunning trick shot.

Social media echoed those cheers, as on X (formerly known as Twitter) @CamH_29 described Trump as a “naughty boy” while @_RachelH1995 wrote that the shot was “unbelievable”.

More info

Trump even left himself on the brown next as he went on to make a 119 break, comfortably sending himself into a two-frame lead which then turned into three as he looked set for victory at 5-2, but Lisowski had other ideas.

The world No 14 recovered to tie the match at 5-5 before Trump claimed the crucial 11th frame, only after all hope had appeared to be lost when in the final frame Lisowski appeared on top, potting a difficult brown and leaving himself with a simple black as he was on his way to the next round.

Don’t miss…

But those earlier cheers from the crowd in China soon turned to gasps as they were gobsmacked that Lisowski somehow missed a pink into the middle pocket, allowing Trump a return to the table where he picked off the remaining balls to much relief – as he will face either Mark Selby or Hossein Vafaei in the next round.

Trump himself had admitted that he thought that he had thrown away the chance of victory, in what would have been a waste of his stunning earlier trick shot, but Lisowski’s error gave him the chance to stay in the tournament.

“I thought I had blown it when I missed the yellow in the last frame,” said Trump. “He was potting some really good balls and had one tricky shot left, and I thought it was game over because he looked good from 5-2 down. I was already thinking about the flight home, but obviously he missed that one. The balls were there but you have to clear up.”
