Eden Hazard could be ready to bring his stellar football career to an end after hinting that the time has come to ‘enjoy life’. The former Belgian international enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Chelsea before joining Spanish giants Real Madrid for a reported £85.8m (€100m) transfer fee in the summer of 2019.

But the high-profile move did not turn out as Hazard had expected. Blighted by injuries and fitness issues, he only made 76 appearances for Los Blancos and could not repeat the form that earned him the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award in 2014-15.

After mutual agreement was reached with the La Liga outfit, Hazard left the Bernabeu in the summer, a year before his contract was due to expire.

Since then he has reportedly been offered contracts from clubs in Belgium, France, Saudi Arabia and the MLS. He was even linked with a possible move to Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

Spanish publication AS fanned the flames of speculation around the Glasgow club by claiming that the winger had offers on the table from “United States, Saudi Arabia, England, Spain, France and even Scotland”.

But a new documentary about the Belgian national team featuring Hazard, suggests that the 32-year-old could be about to call it a day.

In a clip of the production ‘Believe’, Hazard said: “Little by little it’s time to enjoy life with my family and friends, drinking a few Jupiler beers.”

Still without a club, despite numerous offers, all signs are pointing to Hazard potentially being ready to hang up his boots.

The suggestion is backed up by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who insists that there is a ‘concrete’ chance of Hazard retiring this year.

The Italian reporter also shut down the idea of Hazard returning to Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles, two Europa Leagues, the FA Cup and the League Cup during a seven-year stint.

More info

Speaking in an interview with CaughtOffside, Romano said: “There’s a lot being speculated about Eden Hazard, who remains a free agent, but at the moment I’m not aware of anything concrete.

“There are a lot of rumours, but nothing advanced, because at the moment Hazard is still discussing with his family and those close to him about retirement.

“Retirement for Hazard is a concrete possibility, but it’s not a final decision yet, and I think when we talk about a big decision like this for an important player like Hazard, I like to be respectful. It’s the player who has to decide and communicate, not for me or other journalists in general.

“For sure he’s considering retirement, but let’s see what he will decide, and I can say that all the rumours about Belgian clubs, or a return to Chelsea or other clubs, none of this was concrete or true.”
