Police Scotland has announced that five arrests were made for ‘breaching the peace’ at Hampden Park on Tuesday night as England took on Scotland. Tensions flared in the stands at the stadium and one Three Lions supporter is said to have required medical attention after being struck by a bottle from a home fan sat in the stand above.

Despite being labelled as a ‘friendly’, the 150th anniversary of the rivalry between Scotland and England was far from it. The Scotland supporters set the tone for the match before kick-off when they attempted to drown out ‘God Save The King’ with boos.

They also made their feelings clear in the early stages of the match when heckling the England stars as they attempted to settle into the game while in possession.

Supporters are also said to have clashed in the stands at Hampden Park, with some fans overstepping the mark with their conduct. Five arrests were made at the match, with four males and one female removed by police, though it remains unclear as to whether those supporters were Scottish or English.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “There were five arrests at the match last night. Four men aged 22, 23, 26 and 51, and a 30-year-old woman. All related to the breach of peace.”

One fan is said to have been hit in the head by one of the bottles dropped from a height and required medical treatment in the stands.

Clashes between the two sets of supporters have not been unusual in years gone by given the intense rivalry between the nations.
