Manchester United were quick to pour cold water on reports claiming Anwar El-Ghazi had become a transfer target of Erik ten Hag.

'There's no interest' in him, came the strong message from club insiders. Which, to the uneducated when it comes to knowing the inner workings of a club like United, could mean the exact opposite!

And it also begs the question – if United are genuinely not interested in considering a move for the former Aston Villa winger, then why not? El Ghazi left PSV Eindhoven last week and is available on a free transfer.

He would be able to join United outside the transfer window. And he just happened to be a famous face on the Emirates crowd to see Arsenal beat United 3-1 before the international break.

A game which didn't see Jadon Sancho included in Ten Hag's squad. Also a game which saw fellow right winger Antony play like a drain, probably because he had other things on his mind.

Like the growing list of allegations of domestic abuse made against him by three women. The Brazilian is now on a leave of absence so he can sort out his private life, while Sancho remains in the building, but is still on the outside looking in.

Where will Manchester United finish this season? Let us know in the comments section below

It's doubtful Sancho will play many more games for United, while who knows what the future holds for Antony? What we do know is this duo cost United a combined £152m – but have gone on to become two of the most expensive headaches on record.

And finding a cure is going to be a huge problem for Ten Hag. The Dutchman can turn to Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to fill the attacking slot on the right.

But both Rashford and Garnacho prefer to operate on the left, while despite now being United's longest-serving star, Martial still doesn’t appear to have nailed down his best position.

The storm clouds are gathering above Old Trafford, and it's understood senior figures have started the search for a new right winger of proven ability at the highest level.

But given the club's recent track record in this department – no-one will be confident that the next man off the rank will be the answer to the problem.
