Ashes hero Freddie Flintoff’s wife Rachael was told to ‘expect the worst’ after he was airlifted to hospital last December following a horror crash whilst filming a new series of BBC show Top Gear.

Flintoff, 45, became an unmistakable figure on TV after the exuberant cricketer hung up his boots after leading England to Ashes success in 2005 and 2009.

Following the end of his cricketing days, Flintoff starred on Sky show A League of Their Own before he became a surprise presenter on Top Gear – where he self-appointed himself as the TV ‘Daredevil’.

Flintoff had been on the show for four years and had crashed a trike head-first at 124mph and escaped unharmed before suffering a second serious accident whilst filming at the Top Gear test track at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in December 2022.

After remaining out of the public eye for nine months since his crash, Flintoff returned to the Oval away from the crowds during an England practice day on Tuesday ahead of their one-day international against New Zealand after former England team-mate Rob Key, who is now England’s managing director, orchestrated Flintoff’s recent involvement.

Flintoff was spotted wearing a team bucket hat with the scars across his nose and chin visible to see.

But the Lancashire hero had refound his smile as he joked with England players and coaches, with his former Sky Sports presenter buddy David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd saying: “Andrew is home. He’s Freddie again.”

Flintoff’s involvement spurred England on to a dominant victory over New Zealand in the penultimate ODI between the countries.

Ben Stokes’s incredible knock of 182 off 124 balls was just five runs short of the entire tourist’s run total. Dawid Malan scored 96 while Chris Woakes and Liam Livingstone picked up three wickets each.
