Andy Farrell hailed record-breaker Johnny Sexton after Ireland’s veteran skipper inspired another World Cup rout in Nantes.

In leading the 59-16 rout of Tonga, Sexton surpassed Ronan O’Gara’s Irish points record, with his haul of 16 moving him on to 1,090 points.

He is in the form of his long career, with the formidable challenge of world champions South Africa awaiting in Paris in a week’s time.

‘What I’d say, and I’ve said to Johnny in front of the lads, the record is fantastic but he’d say that’s his job,’ said Farrell.

‘But it takes some doing,’ he continued. ‘As a leader, as a player, he’s a lot more than a points-scoring machine. How he prepares his team and gets them up for every game absolutely selflessly, is much more important to him and us.’

Sexton said that his son was asking him about the record in the week before the game, and he joked that it meant more to the child than to him. He acknowledged the magnitude of the achievement, but also said it is a target for other out-halves.

‘It’s there to be broken now,’ he smiled.

It was all smiles as the Irish camp faced the press after their eight-try show against the Tongans.

They have now scored 20 tries in their first two matches of the tournament.

Not only his side’s captain, Sexton is their inspiration, standard-setter and dream-catcher

‘I thought we handled the game and the opponent extremely well,’ said Farrell.

‘Even when things weren’t going too well for us error-wise, as far as controlling territory-wise, I thought we controlled the game really well.

‘Once we got a couple of scores up, I thought we flowed nicely.’

Tonga coach Toutai Kefu bemoaned the 43-point margin, but accepted it was the result of Ireland’s quality of execution. ‘They’re a really complete team,’ he shrugged.
