Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will miss next month’s Shanghai Masters as he takes a break from tennis. The 36-year-old won his 24th Grand Slam title earlier this month as he lifted the US Open trophy and then helped Serbia reach the Davis Cup Final 8.

Djokovic has been in fine form once again this year and would have landed a Calendar Grand Slam had he not lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final in July. The veteran won the Australian Open and the French Open to put himself in the frame to achieve the spectacular feat.

But his run was halted at the All England Club, before he cruised to victory over Daniil Medvedev in Flushing Meadows’ showpiece match. After lifting the trophy in New York, Djokovic headed to Spain for the Davis Cup and defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the singles before losing to Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek in the doubles alongside partner Nikola Cacic.

And following his appearance for Serbia, Djokovic took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his upcoming plans. “Over the years, some of the best support I receive anywhere in the world is in China,” he wrote. “Shanghai has always been one of my favourite tournaments in the season. I will be missing my #NoleFam in China. I hope that I can come back to China in the future and play in front of all of you again.”

The world No 1 will then turn his attentions to the Davis Cup Final 8 in November.

“It is disappointing not to have Novak at our tournament as it has always been a pleasure hosting him here,” explained Shanghai Masters tournament director Michael Luevano following Djokovic’s withdrawal.

“All of us wish him the very best. He has had a very full year and we hope he remains fit and healthy, and we definitely look forward to welcoming him back to the Rolex Shanghai Masters.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you.
