Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Gabriel Martinelli is an injury doubt for this week’s matches against PSV and then Tottenham. The Brazilian forward was forced off in the 1-0 win away to Everton on Sunday and Arteta has since confirmed that he has picked up a hamstring injury.

Martinelli thought that he had given the visitors the lead at Goodison Park, latching onto Fabio Vieira’s through ball before firing past Jordan Pickford – only for his effort to be controversially ruled offside as Eddie Nketiah was adjudged to have infringed during the build-up.

Shortly after picking himself back up after the disallowed goal, Martinelli was forced to be substituted off in the first half having gone down holding his hamstring, a significant blow having become one of the key figures in Arsenal’s attack under Arteta, who provided an update on the 22-year-old.

“He felt something in his hamstring,” Arteta said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Gunners’ Champions League tie with PSV. “We need to do some further tests to assess if there is any big damage or not. He will be out tomorrow that’s for sure.”

When asked about the possibility of Martinelli returning for this weekend’s north London derby with fierce rivals Spurs, he replied: “It’s a possibility, we need to do more tests to see what happens.”

Martinelli missed Arsenal training ahead of their opening European match against PSV, with Leandro Trossard likely to step in for the injured star as he did off the bench against Everton – going on to score the winning goal to secure all three points.
