Lionel Messi has fired shots at Paris Saint-Germain in his latest interview for not recognising his World Cup victory with Argentina. The Inter Miami star claims that the Parisian club didn’t offer him any recognition after he lifted the biggest prize in football, unlike his other 25 teammates in the national team.

Messi guided Argentina to a third World Cup title in Qatar in December last year after defeating France in a thrilling final. The win cemented Messi’s status as one of the greatest players of all time, adding to his extensive list of both individual and team accolades.

But it appears that not everyone was impressed with the feat. Messi’s former team PSG refused to acknowledge the achievement, according to the 36-year-old in a recent interview with OLGA.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner now plies his trade at MLS frachise Inter Miami but still holds some resentment towards his former club. “Even though I wasn’t doing well at PSG, I got to be world champion there. Everything happens for a reason,” Messi said.

“I was the only player from the world champions who didn’t have recognition in his club.”

Following Argentina’s win, back in France there was a sense of unease within the PSG camp. The result saw fellow forward Kylian Mbappe appearing on the losing team which left the Ligue 1 team in a difficult position.

The tensions then grew after a report from French outlet Le Parisien revealed that the club refused to let Messi parade the World Cup trophy on the pitch amid a fear of backlash from the fans. Messi was instead given a guard of honour at the club’s training ground, which the report claims was “sufficient.”

More info

This isn’t the first time that Messi has been involved in harsh scrutiny against his former team. Back in September former PSG forward Neymar claimed that he and Messi “lived in hell” during their time at the club.

“I was very happy for the year [Messi] had, but at the same time very sad, because he lived both sides of the coin,” the Al-Hilal winger said in an interview with Globo. “He went to heaven with the Argentina team, won everything in recent years, and with Paris he lived hell, we lived through hell, both he and I.”

Messi recently suffered a slight injury and has been ruled out of Sunday’s match against Orlando City. However fans are hopeful that he will be available for the U.S. Open Cup Final against Houston Dynamo on September 27.
