Andre Onana's gaffe at Bayern Munich has reportedly reignited tensions over David De Gea's exit from Manchester United and how the former No. 1 was treated on his way out of the club.

United and De Gea parted ways in July after a 12-year relationship, with Sir Alex Ferguson having first signed the Spaniard from Atletico Madrid in 2011. At 32 years of age, it was perhaps natural for the player to part ways with the club, but it was the manner in which his departure was handled that has some at Old Trafford 'still seething'.

That's according to The Sun, which reported 'the United squad' was furious with how De Gea was pointed to the door after more than a decade of loyal service. The former Spain No. 1 didn't have his contract renewed despite keeping more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League last term (17).

However, United were slated when it emerged they withdrew that offer and submitted a new one on lesser terms.

And the goalkeeping woes were highlighted anew on Wednesday after £43.8million successor Onana committed a clanger to hand Bayern the lead in their Champions League opener. Leroy Sane's tame shot from distance squirmed under the Cameroonian's body before Serge Gnabry added a second, and Die Roten went on to win 4-3 after a tighter second half.

It's not the first time Onana's competency between the sticks has been questioned this term, with the stopper fortunate to have not given Wolves a late penalty in his Premier League debut. The former Inter Milan and Ajax star has been praised by some for his passing vision and communication, but the basics have been lacking at times.

To Onana's credit, the new United No. 1 was motivated to speak to the media after being beaten in Bavaria. The 27-year-old held his hands up in conceding the loss was his fault.

It's perhaps inevitable that United's players may examine De Gea's departure from the club and wonder if they'll be treated any better once they're deemed surplus to requirements. De Gea won the Premier League, an FA Cup and a Europa League title during his time at Old Trafford, but that appeared to be forgotten when it came to getting him out of the club.

The veteran stopper remains a free agent and has uploaded training footage to social media in an effort to find a new club. Meanwhile, many in Manchester will be left wondering whether all that change this summer was worth the hassle.
