England and Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is no stranger to setback in football after he was previously relegated from the Football League in the early years of his career.

Ramsdale, 25, found himself dropped by Mikel Arteta during Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Goodison Park against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday. Ramsdale joined the Gunners in 2021 in a £30million deal, ousting former No.1 Bernd Leno but his position has come under pressure from David Raya this season.

But Ramsdale’s journey to the Champions League has been far from straightforward after he previously found himself relegated out of the Football League during an early loan spell from Bournemouth. Ramsdale joined Bournemouth in 2017 for £800,000 from Sheffield United and in 2018 was loaned out in January to help League Two side Chesterfield attempt to survive relegation.

Ramsdale played 19 times for Chesterfield during the second half of the 2017/18 season and his spell at the Spireites began with him shipping four goals in a 4-0 defeat away against Accrington Stanley on his debut.

But his home bow proved to be a hit after they beat now Premier League side Luton Town 2-0 at home, who would finish 2nd in the league and begin their surge up the EFL. Ramsdale ended up conceding 33 goals and keeping just two clean sheets as Chesterfield finished rock bottom, eight points from safety.

Ramsdale joined AFC Wimbledon in League One the following season before returning to the south coast and becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League. Ramsdale suffered back-to-back top-flight relegations at Bournemouth and Sheffield United, with him currently having just one international cap more than he does relegations on his CV.

Arteta’s decision to give Raya his Arsenal debut at the expense of Ramsdale saw Gunners fan Piers Morgan label the call ‘humiliating’. But Arteta revealed after the game his reasoning for rotating his two keepers.

He said: “I think I mentioned it that we wanted to build a squad with two quality players in each position, with different characteristics, and we have got that now. "And to maximise that they have to play games, and we have a lot of things coming up now. And we have the same with other players we have rotated and there will be a lot of game-time in the next few weeks."
