The spolis were shared in the North London Derby as Arsenal and Tottenham drew 2-2 at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon. Express Sport takes you through five things we learned from a scintillating encounter…

Son and Maddison’s chemistry catches the eye

Heung Min Son and James Maddison are developing quite a partnership at the heart of Tottenham’s attack. The pair tormented Arsenal’s defence all afternoon as they effortlessly played through the middle of William Saliba and Gabriel Megahales with beautiful overlapping football.

After Saka’s strike was helped into the back of the net by the outstretched boot of Cristian Romero to make it 1-0 to the Gunners, Maddison picked out Son on the edge of the six-yard box to silence the Emirates and draw Spurs level.

When Arsenal regained the lead courtesy of a Bukayo Saka penalty, the dynamic duo were on hand to grab another equaliser moments later as Maddison pounced on a mistake from Jorginho and slotted Son in behind. Surprisingly, both were subbed off in the 78th minute.

Arsenal lose new undroppable

A loud groan rang around the Emirates when the Jumbotron announced that Declan Rice had been subbed off for Jorginho. Arsenal’s record signing was pictured on the bench with his left calf bandaged up in what could be a costly setback for the Gunner’s Premier League hopes.

Fabio Vieria also made way for Kai Havertz at the break and instantly there was a shift in momentum in the centre of the park. Rice was tireless in the first half, mopping up loose balls and covering for his full-backs brilliantly as he burst forward in attack. Jorginho and Havertz were flat by comparison and a mistake from the former led to Spurs’ second goal.

Don’t miss… We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Arsenal need a proper goalscorer

The missing piece to Mikel Areta’s puzzle is a clinical No 9. Gabriel Jesus has been excellent when called upon but he isn’t the archetypal centre forward that the Gunners’ need to take them to that next level. Neither is Eddie Nketiah, who started down the middle for them today.

Missed opportunities from both men in front of goal cost Arsenal all three points today. Nketiah’s positioning was of particular concern. In the second half, Saka whipped a dangerous-looking ball across Tottenham’s box that cleared the back post unchallenged.

“Nketiah has to be there, why is he not at the back post? It reminds me of Ian Wright, that was his old position, that’s such a big chance. How does he not smell, sniff, anticipate that one? He’s got to be there, that’s his job. Look at him, he has got to be flying at that back post and he’s late.
