Benjamin Sesko has revealed why he opted for a move to RB Leipzig amid interest from Manchester United in 2022. United were reportedly interested in Sesko as Erik ten Hag pursued a young striker in his first summer transfer window at Old Trafford but missed out on his signature.

The 20-year-old Slovenian caught the eye at Austrian giants RB Salzburg after breaking through as a teenager during the 2021/22 season.

It drove up heavyweight interest in his services, but Leipzig won the race, agreeing to sign him on a five-year contract 12 months in advance.

Sesko’s goalscoring exploits improved in his final season at Salzburg, completing his switch to Leipzig this summer after registering 29 goals and 11 assists in 79 appearances.

He has netted three times in his first six outings for the Bundesliga outfit this term, while United splashed £72million to sign fellow youngster Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta.

Sesko has addressed his Old Trafford snub last year, claiming he believed Leipzig was the best place to continue his career due to the club’s similar playstyle to Salzburg.

I already knew what I had to do and didn’t have to go through a whole learning process again.”

Sesko has already represented Slovenia 22 times, scoring seven goals, and hopes to spearhead Leipzig to a successful campaign in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

He found the net in the club’s Champions League Group G opener at BSC Young Boys, a 3-1 win, with games against holders Manchester City and Red Star Belgrade to come.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. We have to perform. We have to show that we can win the games. It’s obviously a lot of games.

“We just have to be 100 per cent or even more every single game because the games are every third or fourth day. But as I said, we have a really good team.
