AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho has remained defiant after his side were thrashed 4-1 by Genoa, with the fans turning on the team and demanding they ‘show some b***s’.

Goals from Albert Gudmundsson, Mateo Retegui, Morten Thorsby and Junior Messias saw the hosts dismantle Mourinho’s side.

Bryan Cristante’s equaliser on the 22nd minute proved to mean little as Roma fell to defeat which made it one win in six Serie A matches at the start of the season.

The defeat also signalled a new record for Mourinho, with five points in six matches beating his previous low of seven in six with Chelsea in 2015-16.

Losing 4-1 led to the fans chanting at Mourinho and his players after the match as they said ‘we want respect’, ‘we’ve had enough’ and ‘show us some b***s’.

After the match, Mourinho would only take questions from the pitchside reporter as he told DAZN: ‘I apologise to the studio, but I have no real desire to talk. I didn’t speak to the players. When I don’t talk to the players, then it means I can’t really discuss this in-depth and answer your questions either.’

He continued to discuss the lack of team spirit in correlation to losing star players such as Chris Smalling through injury.

Mourinho continued: ‘To say we lost the solidity because we are missing this or that player is not fair either. Solidity is also the consequence of team spirit and collective work to track back. We have lost some of that.’

The Portugal manager hit back when asked about the poor start to the season for Roma, hitting back at his critics after reaching consecutive European finals.

‘It is the worst of my career too,’ he said. ‘However, I also think it is the first time that Roma have played two European Finals in a row.’

The former Chelsea boss finalised by sending a message to his players as he said that they must work hard on the training ground despite feeling ‘hurt’.

‘It is the squad we have and with this squad we must emerge from this situation,’ he said. ‘There is no more transfer window, nobody can leave or arrive, this is the group we have with its qualities and its problems.

‘We have no time to cry. We can cry internally, because it hurts our heart, especially for me because of my rapport with the Roma fans. But tomorrow we will be back at work. The next game is worth three points, not seven or eight, but it becomes a very, very important match for us.’
