Manchester United have confirmed that defender Lisandro Martinez will be sidelined for an “extended period” of time after suffering a similar injury to the one picked up in the second half of last season. He suffered the setback to his ankle during the defeat to Arsenal earlier this month, adding to Erik ten Hag’s injury crisis that has also been joined by Sergio Reguilon.

In a club statement, United said: “Lisandro Martinez will be out of action for an extended period due to an aggravation of the foot injury he suffered in April. The Argentinian defender experienced the setback in our Premier League game against Arsenal earlier this month.

“But it has now been determined that he needs a period on the sidelines for recovery and rehabilitation. Assessment is ongoing to decide next steps.”

The club also confirmed that on-loan defender Reguilon would miss the second part of a double-header with Crystal Palace as a result of a minor injury, as he is expected to return shortly.

Various reports have suggested that United expect Martinez to be out of action for a similar period when he fractured his ankle last season, which saw him miss several months including the FA Cup final.

This comes amid an injury crisis that has already seen defenders Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tyrella Malacia ruled out for lengthy periods while centre-backs Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire have recently recovered from injury.
