Liverpool’s current owners Fenway Sports Group have come in for some criticism among the fanbase, but one man they may be thankful for is Mike Gordon for his role in keeping star man Mohamed Salah at the club. The Egyptian has scored three goals and claimed four more assists in the Reds’ opening six Premier League games, and looks likely to prove the key to any title aspirations.

Jurgen Klopp’s outfit are sat in second place in the table, just two points behind leaders Manchester City, and despite last season’s drop-off in form they have experience in going toe-to-toe with the defending champions. One man they are extremely unlikely to challenge without, however, is their talisman Salah.

Despite a wealth of attacking options at Klopp’s disposal, without Salah there would be a glaring gap on the right of Liverpool’s attacking trident and there were fears that he may join the exodus to Saudi Arabia.

Captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho headed to the Middle East along with the likes of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, while there was late pressure from Al-Ittihad on Liverpool to part ways with Salah to the tune of £150million.

However, Gordon led negotiations and politely declined the offer in a phone call held between the two sets of officials.

Gordon rejected the proposal and Liverpool considered the matter closed on transfer deadline day, though Saudi teams did have a week remaining to make further acquisitions – but they were unable to persuade Gordon to part ways with Salah.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Don’t miss…

With Salah already into his thirties, some club officials may have been tempted to cash in and use the colossal transfer fee to reinvest in the squad. However, Gordon stood with Klopp and insisted that there was no chance that Salah was going to leave Liverpool in the summer.

Now they are getting their rewards for that decision, with the Reds flying and hoping to rekindle their rivalry with Manchester City at the top of the table. It is difficult to imagine that Liverpool could mount a title challenge without Salah though – precisely why Gordon and co were so keen to keep him at Anfield.

But it is unlikely that Saudi interest will dissipate after Gordon’s rejection, as they are said to be ready to return in January or next summer and Liverpool will be posed another tough question once again over how highly they value their key man. But for now they will be delighted that Salah is here for the time being though.

The 23/24 home shirt for Liverpool pays homage to the past of the club, as well as collaborator Nike, with a strong 1970s influence. The iconic red, capped with bold white cuffs and collar really does invoke that classic Liverpool FC style while adding a cool retro touch
