Scottie Scheffler was overcome with emotion after Team Europe secured a record victory in an 18-hole Ryder Cup match.

The 27-year-old was spotted rubbing his eyes while being consoled by wife Meredith before being dropped for the fourballs despite leading the world rankings – during a nightmare Ryder Cup defence for Zak Johnson and his team.

Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg made foursomes history against world No.1 Scheffler and five time major championship winner Brooks Koepka to win nine and seven on Saturday morning as Europe took a 9 1/2 to 2 1/2 lead going into the penultimate session. The three wins from four matches on Saturday meant that they only needed five more points from a possible 16.

Luke Donald's inspired squad started in fine form at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club with a clean sweep on Friday morning and a win and three ties in the afternoon.

Saturday morning bought wins for Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton as well as the brilliance of Aberg and Hovland.

Scheffler's reaction showed just how much the struggles were impacting the holders, who won 19-9 at Whistling Straits in a dominant victory in 2021.

Donald's side held the joint biggest lead ever going into the second morning, with USA's Zach Johnson saying that many of his players weren't feeling well.

He said: "We're fighting things internally. It's kind of passed around a little bit, caddies, players."

He added: "I'm grateful we have a team doctor. The bottom line is there's been some unforeseen things that we've had to navigate around, which is really unfortunate, in the sense of health. It's not an excuse, because we have depth."
