Diogo Jota's reckless sending off meant Liverpool were reduced to just nine men against Tottenham.

The striker had been booked just moments before his cynical foul on Destiny Udogie. The referee showed the Portuguese forward a second yellow card, leaving Jurgen Klopp's side in an even more difficult position away from home.

It came in the 69th minute, with the Reds already under immense pressure but level at 1-1 ,despite being a man down for the majority of the game. That was thanks to Curtis Jones' 26th minute sending off for a horror tackle on Yves Bissouma.

Jota had just been booked a minute earlier for tripping up Udogie from behind in an attempt to stop Spurs' counter-attack. But he appeared to forget that almost instantly.

The 26-year-old lost the ball to Udogie on the right flank and sought to make amends by desperately flicking out his leg. His late challenge sent the Italian tumbling down and the referee reaching into his pocket.

The Liverpool man tried to protest the decision but to no avail. And he was slammed for losing his head by Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville.

Neville said disgustedly: "Well that's stupidity. Jurgen Klopp won't have much time for that.

"What is he doing? He just has to let him go but he lunges in. Not much contact in it but the left-back's aware Jota's just been booked.

"That is not very clever from Jota. He's let his team-mates down there."
