Rory McIlroy was involved in a Ryder Cup ruck with his American rivals following an explosive end to day two in Rome.

The European talisman could be seen launching a foul-mouthed attack on someone from Team USA – as it all kicked-off at Marco Simone Golf Club. A seething McIlroy had to be kept apart from someone believed to be US caddy Joe LaCava, by fellow bag man Jim 'Bones' Mackay.

He was then bundled into a car by team-mate Shane Lowry. McIlroy uses the F-word and jabs his finger in the direction of a group of Team USA members, thought to include LaCava.

The Northern Irishman had clashed with LaCava minutes earlier on the side of the 18th green – after him and Matt Fitzpatrick lost their fourballs match to Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark. He was annoyed when LaCava, who used to caddy for Tiger Woods, waved his cap in the air just before McIlroy was about to putt for birdie in a bid to save the game.

The suggestion was LaCava was celebrating too exuberantly for Europe's liking in the direction of the world No.2. The pair exchanged words – and it appears the row continued into the club car park.

The incident is sure to add extra spice to today's singles clashes. Europe hold a five point lead heading into the final day showdown – and are red hot favourites to win back the Ryder Cup.

Speaking about the incident, McIlroy's Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald described the Northern Irishman as a "passionate" player and promised to have a chat with him about it. "I'll talk with Rory when I get back," he said. "We always try with passion, energy and also respect, so that will be my message to the players.
