Premier League officials Darren England and Dan Cook have been punished by the PGMOL again after being dropped for this weekend’s round of fixtures following their appalling VAR error last Saturday. The duo failed to overturn an on-field decision after Luis Diaz had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside during Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham.

The Reds thought they had taken the lead during their showdown in north London when Diaz latched onto a through ball from Mohamed Salah and swept the ball beyond keeper Guglielmo Vicario. The assistant referee flagged for offside, before England and Cook checked the strike on the screen.

However, the VAR officials mistakenly thought referee Simon Hooper had allowed the goal to stand and came back with a ‘check complete’ message rather than overruling the original decision.

England and Cook have already been punished after they were stood down for Nottingham Forest’s clash with Brentford the day after their error as well as being taken off duties for Chelsea’s trip to Fulham on Monday night. And they won’t be returning to their VAR roles this weekend.

But the names of England and Cook are nowhere to be seen. Hooper, meanwhile, will be returning to officiating duties as he has been given the role of VAR for Everton’s clash with Bournemouth on Saturday.

Following the incident at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, PGMOL released a statement which read: “PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool. The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials.

“This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene. PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error. PGMOL will immediately be contacting Liverpool at the conclusion of the fixture to acknowledge the error.”

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you.
