Since walking through the Old Trafford gates last summer, Erik ten Hag has regularly stressed the importance of dripping academy players into his Manchester United first team. One of the likely next graduates made his senior debut last week and has been likened to seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.

Dan Gore made a 30-minute cameo off the bench in last Tuesday’s 3-0 Carabao Cup third-round win against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, marking a memorable birthday present.

The 19-year-old midfielder impressed viewers with his comfort on the ball and eagerness to take opposition players on.

Ten Hag shared the widespread positive view on Gore’s senior bow, insisting he deserved the opportunity to shine.

He said: “I think it’s a great birthday for him, but I’m not a manager – and we don’t have coaches here – who give players opportunities [for nothing]. They have to deserve it.

“Once they deserve it, they get the chance. But then they have to prove it, and I think the young players like Hannibal, Pellistri and Garnacho have to do it every time.

“We are very critical. They deserve it every day in training. When the standards are too low, they will hear it, and we don’t play them because they have to train every day to the maximum.”
