David Beckham says chants of 'Posh Spice takes it up the a**e' served as motivation – but Victoria is still haunted by the memory.

Posh and Becks were regularly targeted by football fans wherever Manchester United were playing, but Victoria admits when the attention of songs turned to her, she was left disgusted. Chants began after the 1998 World Cup where David returned home as public enemy No1 following his red card against Argentina in the match where England were eliminated.

David was booed and jeered at every away ground and the songs got increasingly vile, which he has now recalled in the new Netflix documentary about his life. Remembering the abuse, Golden Balls said: "Then they start singing songs about Victoria. There was one song which she will kill me for singing. Every football fan sang this song…”

But then the cameras cut to Victoria, who says: "Posh Spice takes it up the a**e! Excuse my language, not very lady-like. 75,000 people were singing that. It’s embarrassing, it’s hurtful.

"I remember sitting down and the lady sitting next to me turning to me, she said ‘do you want a polo?’ She didn’t know what to say! Do I want a polo? What do you say when you’re sat next to someone and 75,000 people say you take it up the a**e! We did not know what to do, it felt like we were drowning.”

But while it pained David, it proved to be motivation. “As hard as it was looking up to the stands and seeing Victoria, it was the one thing that spurred me on," he said. "When fans felt like they could get to me by singing hurtful things about my family, I would score a goal." Abuse directed at the Beckhams regularly crossed the line.

Bullets were once sent in the post to Manchester United, addressed to David. And following the birth of first child Brooklyn, a few months after the 1998 World Cup, they were hit with kidnap threats. “We were getting kidnapping threats right from when we had Brooklyn," Victoria recalls.

"I can’t explain how that feels, because you can’t hide. These are all things that are coming back to me. I am finding it quite stressful doing these interviews with you because I have blocked so much of it out, and David had too. But now it’s coming back to me.

"Imagine having a baby and having death threats. David had to play knowing this was all going on. I was on my own, in an apartment with a baby. So I would go to the games with Brooklyn. The abuse is hard to explain.”
